Box Anywhere is live!
Box Anywhere: Wynberg, Cape Town
The idea to #boxanywhere came about early one morning when Coach Romeo and I took our boxing training out of the gym and into the food court of a nearby eatery. Not only was it exhilarating to be punching it out in public, but soon a crowd of interested and enthusiastic people grew, cheering us on.
On a personal level, going into a public space like that forced me to confront my insecurities and feelings of vulnerability and claim back the right to just be me – wherever I was.
While I felt exposed, I also felt strong and empowered, and wondered what this would feel like if I were expressing my strength and courage – through boxing – in other places that made me feel vulnerable, or which were in some way … contested spaces. So, when Coach suggested we take boxing out of the ring and box anywhere, I was bets.
This, the first installment, was shot in an area near my home, which had become notorious for muggings, car break-ins and other crime. It was significant for me to claim back a space which made me feel unsafe so close to home.
